The difference between splitting itself (asexual reproduction) or going through intercourse depends on the basic knowledge of genes and possibility of development and regeneration. Any individual (animal, plant, bacteria…) will have a reproduction dependent on the plasticity of its adult form. Humans cannot divide themselves, therefore sexual reproduction is required.
The best example is hydra (using budding), where cells will grow and develop into a new hydra.
