If I had to advance science, I would do my “I am a scientist” project which is to be involved with Research Awareness.
Ensuring that people know about research projects and how to get access to participant information in order to potentially participate.
Without human participants, science cannot progress and I know that very well as I am totally dependent on them to do my research.

In my current work I am hoping to identify the genes that influence are chances of getting depression. Then the next step is to work out what each of those genes does. Once that has been established hopefully it will be easier to work out which medications are the best depending on which genes the person has.

At the moment in genetic research, we:
      – recruit patients through the NHS to scientific studies
      – conduct the study
      – publish the results of the study in scientific journals.
What I’d like to do is figure out ways of getting those results back into NHS care.
The reason I went into science was to make a difference for people with rare genetic diseases and I feel strongly now that there is a gap in the system in terms of getting scientific discoveries implemented into healthcare (even if the evidence and financial incentives make sense) so I’m studying how to do this better for genetic diseases.
