Question: hi Matt. what plans shares the closest genetic material to humans and if there is one that is really close, how did it get to have similar genetic material to us?
Plants and humans shared a common ancestor about 1.6 billion years ago. That means plant and human DNA has had 1.6 billion years to diverge (become different). Having said that “when we look at plant genes, we can find over half of them have some recognisable counterpart in humans.”
